Paul Van Gysegem

Paul Van Gysegem (born June 6, 1935 in Berlare ) is a Belgian jazz and improvisation musician ( double bass , composition ) and visual artist.

Paul Van Gysegem first studied fine arts at the Academie van Gent, then at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. His visual work includes sculptures, paintings and graphics. Van Gysegem composed film scores in the 1960s (including for Raoul Servais ' Goldframe ) and in 1971 directed a sextet (with Jasper van't Hof , Nolle Neels , Patrick De Groote , Pierre Courbois and Ronald LeCourt) with whom the album Aorta ( Futura , 1971) emerged. In 1971 he put together an ensemble in which his quintet of Patrick De Groote, Nolle Neels (tenor saxophone), Ronald LeCourt (vibraphone) and Kenneth Tyler (drums) played with guest soloists Ambrose Jackson and Steve Potts ; the session was recorded by the Belgian TV channel BRT. He also worked with Steve Lacy , Mal Waldron and Fred Van Hove and organized the Gravensteen jazz festival. In later years he worked with the CO2 Quartet (with Cel Overberghe , Giovanni Barcella , Tom Van Overberghe ) and in a trio with Chris Joris and Patrick De Groote.
