Life

Paulus Winkelbauer was born on October 6, 1932 in the Lower Austrian town of Weißenbach near Gastern and was subsequently baptized with the name Otto . His siblings were Margarete Winkelbauer (later married Mayer) and Johann Winkelbauer (1928–2009), who also became a priest. He completed his school education in 1953 at the Stiftsgymnasium Seitenstetten . Then he entered the Cistercian monastery Zwettl on August 14, 1953, where he received the religious name Paulus . This was followed by studies of theology in Zwettl, Heiligenkreuz and at the Papal Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome , before the then 25-year-old was ordained a priest on July 25, 1958 in the Zwettl collegiate church .

In 1962 Winkelbauer was appointed chaplain of the Zwettl monastery parish Zistersdorf and from 1965 was construction director and guest master at Zwettl monastery. After his doctorate in theology in 1969 , he was appointed provisional von Etzen that same year . From 1970 he taught as a religion professor at the Bundesgymnasium Rechts Kremszeile in Krems an der Donau , where he taught until his retirement on August 31, 1995. On September 1, 1988, Winkelbauer was appointed by Franz Žak , the diocesan bishop of St. Pölten , as a specialist inspector for Catholic religious instruction at all secondary schools in the Waldviertel region . Until 1991, as a representative of the diocese of St. Pölten, he was also involved in the interdiocesan textbook conference in the development of curricula for religious instruction.

After Bertrand Baumann had announced his resignation as abbot of Zwettl Abbey in 1992 - after reaching the age limit of 75 - Paulus Winkelbauer succeeded him. Elected to the 67th abbot of the monastery on August 5, 1993 , Benediction took place on August 15, 1993 by the Abbot General of the Cistercian Order, Polikárp Zakar , Winkelbauer. At the time of his assumption of office, the convention had 28 members, 25 of them capitulars with voting rights and solemn profession. His motto was The love of Christ urges us (2 Cor 5.14). After just three years, Winkelbauer resigned in March 1996, after which he returned to the rectory in Stein , where he had already lived as a religion teacher. His brother Johann had been pastor there since 1970, when Paulus was also active as a religion teacher. When his brother retired as pastor of Stein, Paulus Winkelbauer moved to Vienna, where he lived until he fell seriously ill in autumn 2007. Until recently, the Councilor helped out as a pastor in his parish in Vienna and in a parish in Burgenland .

Winkelbauer died on February 18, 2008 at the age of 75 in Vienna and was buried on February 23, 2008 in the grave of his parents in the Gastern cemetery.

In the magazine Das Waldviertel , which reported, among other things, about his being voted out and later resignation, an obituary for Winkelbauer appeared under the title Abbot Paulus Winkelbauer died . Obituaries for the deceased also appeared in other media.
