Wolfgang Wiedermann OCist (* 31 December 1940 in Zistersdorf as Peter Wiedermann ) is an Austrian priest and from 1996 to 2016, the 68th abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Zwettl .

Life

Wolfgang Wiedermann was born on December 31, 1940 in the Lower Austrian municipality of Zistersdorf and was subsequently baptized in the name of Peter . He completed his school education in 1959 with the Matura at the Stiftsgymnasium Seitenstetten and then entered the Zwettl Monastery in the Waldviertel , where he was dressed on September 7, 1959 . After his profession on September 8, 1960, Wiedermann studied theology in Heiligenkreuz . On April 20, 1965, under Bishop Franz Žak Wiedermann was ordained a priest in the Zwettl collegiate church . He then worked for ten years as chaplain and pastor in the Neukloster Abbey in Wiener Neustadt and returned to Zwettl in the mid-1970s, where he became prior and head of the educational center. He has been a chaplain since 1977 and pastor in the Windigsteig monastery parish since 1993 .

After Paulus Winkelbauer resigned after three years as Abbot of Zwettl in March 1996, Wiedermann was elected as successor to Winkelbauer as the 68th abbot of the Cistercian monastery on May 6th, 1996 and appointed on June 2nd, 1996. Furthermore, the member of the priestly council of the diocese of St. Pölten was elected abbot praeses at the 19th ordinary congregation chapter of the Austrian Cistercian Congregation on June 12, 2007 in the Rein Abbey . In this function he was re-elected on June 20, 2014 at the congregational chapter in Lilienfeld Abbey . In 2011, Wiedermann was confirmed as Abbot of Zwettl for a further five years - although he had already reached the age limit of 70 years (previously it was 75 years).

In the first ten years as Abbot von Zwettl, Wiedermann tried to restructure the economy, as well as pastoral care and the cohesion of the convent . Furthermore, under his leadership, the general renovation of the monastery, especially the abbey church, began in 2006. These were also the most comprehensive renovation measures since the monastery was baroque in the 18th century. The work on the collegiate church and the other buildings in the complex cost around 13 million euros. The restoration and revitalization work was finally completed in 2014; the church itself had already been reopened in September 2013 - on the occasion of the 875th anniversary of the monastery - after a four-year ban. The pontifical high mass took place on September 15, 2013. The larger restoration projects include the revitalization of the orangeries and gardens, the renovation of the empty monastery buildings, some of which have been converted into apartments, and the accommodation of a youth welfare project in the renovated fishing houses. Furthermore, emphasis was placed on the tourist infrastructure (parking lots), which was also modernized. The library was also opened to visitors.

On September 20, 2014, Wolfgang Wiedermann and Christian Haidinger , the abbot of the Altenburg Benedictine Abbey , were awarded the Golden Commander's Cross of Honor for Services to the State of Lower Austria (third highest level). His other honors include being made an honorary citizen of Yspertal in 2007 and an honorary citizen of Windigsteig in 2010

On May 30, 2016 , the now 75-year-old resigned and finally resigned as abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Zwettl; at the same time he resigned from his position as abbot president of the Austrian Cistercian Congregation. His successor was initially Albert Filzwieser , who had been appointed as administrator of the post for a year, before the Pole John Szypulski end of May 2017 became the successor Again's when he was elected the 69th abbot of the monastery and the end of August 2017 formally sworn in office has been. Today (as of 2020) the retired abbot, who among other things bears the episcopal honorary title of consistorial councilor , is still the spiritual director of the educational center and is again active as a pastor in Windigsteig.
