Pebulate can be obtained by reacting phosgene with 1-propanethiol and its product with butylethylamine .

Pebulate is used as a herbicide in sugar beet, tobacco and tomato cultivation. The compound was introduced by Stauffer Chemical in 1954 as a selective pre-emergence herbicide . Pebulate works by inhibiting lipid synthesis.

The amount applied fell to zero in the USA by 2008.
