Penehupifo Pohamba (born June 16, 1948 in Okatale , South West Africa ) was Namibia's first lady as the wife of President Hifikepunye Pohamba from 2005 to 2015 .

Pohamba attended elementary and secondary school in Odibo , among others with the later Minister Joel Kaapanda . She was a teacher at St. George's Diocesan School in Windhoek . She was married to Malakias Shiluwa from 1969, with whom she has son Waldheim (* 1971) and daughter Ndelitungapo (* 1973). Her husband was killed in a land mine around 1973. With her second husband Hifikepunye she has the children Tulongeni (* 1986), Kaupumhote (* 1988) and Ndapanda (* 1991).

Political career

Pohamba left her homeland in 1976 as a member of SWAPO as part of the Namibian liberation struggle and moved to Zambia via Angola . A few months later she was sent to Tanzania for medical training . There she also worked in refugee camps for Namibian exiles . Pohamba studied midwife in Jamaica for three years . Back in Angola, she mainly worked as a doctor before she was sent to the German Democratic Republic to study political science in 1981 . Two years later she returned to Angola, where she married the future President Hifikepunye Pohamba.

As First Lady, Pohamba campaigned primarily for women's rights in Namibia. The topic of AIDS was particularly important to her . In 2006 she was elected Vice-Chair of the Development Committee of the Southern African Development Community.

Awards

On Heldentag 2014, Pohamba was awarded the Most Brilliant Order of the Sun, 1st class . The Lady Pohamba private hospital in Windhoek is named after her, and she is the patron of this hospital .
