Pentabromethylbenzene - also known as 1,2,3,4,5-pentabromo-6-ethylbenzene or 2,3,4,5,6-pentabromethylbenzene - is an organic chemical compound .

Extraction and presentation

Pentabromethylbenzene is a derivative of ethylbenzene and can be synthesized from this by bromination in the presence of aluminum bromide or iron as a Friedel-Crafts catalyst .

properties

The compound is a white solid that decomposes above 210 ° C. Due to the substitution with five bromine atoms, pentabromethylbenzene has a significantly lower volatility than ethylbenzene.

There is an isomer of pentabromethylbenzene in which the alkyl chain is perbrominated instead of the aromatic .

use

Pentabromethylbenzene is used as a flame retardant . In electronic waste an average concentration of 4 was in a 2011 study conducted  ppm found what the presence of PBEB confirmed in electronic devices.
