Pepe Deluxé is a Finnish band. Their stylistic spectrum ranges from trip-hop and big beat to pop and rock ; supplemented by some related varieties such as turntablism and psychedelic .

Career

In 1996, James Spectrum (Jari Salo), JA-Jazz (Tomi Paajanen) and DJ Slow (Vellu Maurola) came together in Helsinki, Finland, to form the Pepe Deluxé trio. DJ Slow and JA-Jazz left the band in 2001 and 2008, respectively. Paul Malmström also joined the band in 2008 and has since formed the duo Pepe Deluxé with James Spectrum. Probably also due to this change of personnel, the sound of the band changed over the years from mainly electronically generated music to mostly live recorded music .

music

One of the first releases by Pepe Deluxé was the song Call Me Goldfinger , which appeared on the compilation Return of the DJ Vol. II . They also remixed Burning Down the House from Tom Jones and the Cardigans in their early stages ; a cover version , originally by Talking Heads . In both songs the scratching technique is quite dominant.

There is also some cracking on their first album , Super Sound . It essentially consists of samples , including the genres of blues , soul and funk . Because of these many samples, generated mainly from records from garage sales and flea markets, Super Sound was released in three different versions in order to avoid copyright problems in the different countries in which it was published .

Beatitude , the second album, also contains samples. At the same time, however, instruments are an important element. Pepe Deluxé invited numerous guest musicians for Beatitude , so that more than 30 people were involved in the recordings . They played guitars , basses , drums , keyboards , wind and string instruments , among other things . Various singers can also be heard. Many of the parts recorded by these musicians, however, are produced in such a way that they sound like samples from recordings from the 1960s and '70s.

On their third album, Spare Time Machine , Pepe Deluxé finally did without samples from other musicians. But with this album, too, they pursued the concept of making the recording sound as if it came from the '60s. So they first played Spare Time Machine on cassettes and then sampled themselves during the mixing process . The resulting vintage sound is reinforced by the fact that they used contemporary instruments for the recordings of the individual songs . In addition, exotic instruments such as marimbas and Marxophones were used.

On their fourth album, Queen of the Wave , a concept album on the theme of Atlantis , even more extraordinary sounds can be heard: Pepe Deluxé play the Great Stalacpipe Organ - the largest instrument in the world.

Trivia

For the computer game Angry Birds Go! Pepe Deluxé composed the soundtrack .

The song Salami Fever from the album Beatitude was sampled by the band The Prodigy for the song Take Me to the Hospital from the album Invaders Must Die .

In a commercial for jeans by Levi′s , the song Before You Leave can be heard, which is included on the album Super Sound under the title Woman in Blue .

All income from the sale of Queen of the Wave will be donated by Pepe Deluxé to the John Nurminen Foundation, which, among other things, is committed to a clean Baltic Sea .

Ron “The Hedgehog” Jeremy , a porn actor , signed a contract to co-finance the production of the fifth album. In return, Pepe Deluxé recorded an EP with funk for him - limited to a single copy.
