Bloom in detail

Pereskia aculeata is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet aculeata comes from Latin , means 'prickly' and refers to the thorny shoots. Trivial names are “Barbados Gooseberry”, “Bugambilia Blanca”, “Camelia Blanca”, “Grosellero”, “Jasmin de Uvas”, “Leafy Cactus”, “Lemon Vine”, “Ramo de Novia”, “Rose Cactus”, “Surinam” Gooseberry ”and“ Tsumya ”.

description

Pereskia aculeata forms splayed shrubs to woody, climbing lianas 3 to 10 meters in length. The grayish brown, somewhat longitudinally fissured main shoots have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters.

The slightly fleshy leaves of various sizes and shapes are elliptical or ovate, lanceolate to obovate and have short stems . The entire, bare leaf blade is 4.5 to 11 inches long and 1.5 to 5 inches wide and pointed to pointed at the tip. The pinnate leaf veins have 4 to 7 side branches. The central rib is raised at the bottom. The thorns are dimorphic (two-shaped). The primary 1 to 3 spines are always bent back and claw-like. They usually appear in pairs, are somewhat flattened and 4 to 8 millimeters long. Up to 25 secondary spines appear from older areoles . These are straight, spread out, and 1 to 3.5 inches long.

The whitish to yellowish or pinkish and fragrant, short-stalked, hermaphrodite flowers are in terminal or lateral and paniculate inflorescences of 70 (or more) individual flowers. They reach a diameter of 2.5 to 5 centimeters and have very many, relatively short, uneven and basal stamens . The perigonium has two circles with a few (10–18) tepals. The ovary is upper constant to half upper constant with a thickish stylus , the more or less upright scar is lobed.

The edible, spherical, fleshy, initially thorny or leafy, slightly leathery, multi-seeded fruits , berries ( false fruit ) with thin, smooth skin have a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters. When ripe they are yellow to orange. Remnants of flowers may be present. The flattened, finely textured seeds are blackish and about 4–5 millimeters in size, smooth and with a small hilum .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

The distribution area of Pereskia aculeata extends through the Caribbean and extends in South America to the northeast of Argentina . The first description was in 1768 by Philip Miller . A synonym is Cactus pereskia L.

Pereskia aculeata is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified not endangered.

Fruits of Pereskia aculeata

Human use

The fruits and leaves of the plant are used as food in parts of Brazil. The plant bears the popular name ora-pro-nóbis (Latin "Pray for us", from the Catholic liturgy ). With their protein content of around 3%, the fresh leaves are considered the "meat of the poor". The dried leaves have a protein content of around 25%. In addition, the fresh leaves are rich in some minerals ( calcium , manganese , zinc , iron ) and vitamins ( A , C , folic acid ), as well as fiber.

The fruits are used raw or cooked.
