Perry Smith (politician)
Perry Smith (* 12. May 1783 in Woodbury , Connecticut , † 8. June 1852 in New Milford , Connecticut) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , of the Senate of the United States belonged to Connecticut.
After attending secondary school, Perry Smith studied the rights at the Law School in Litchfield . He was inducted into the Bar in 1807 and began practicing in New Milford, Litchfield County .
Politically, Smith was first active as a member of the House of Representatives from Connecticut from 1822 to 1823. Between 1829 and 1837 he held the post of postmaster of New Milford; During this time he was also a judge at a probate court from 1833 to 1835. From 1835 to 1836 he sat again in the State House of Representatives.
In 1836 Perry Smith was elected to the US Senate for the Democrats, from March 4, 1837 to March 3, 1843. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry . After leaving the Senate, he worked again as a lawyer in New Milford, where he died in June 1852.
