Pete Duel (* 24. February 1940 in Rochester , New York as Peter Deuel Ellstrom ; † 31 December 1971 in Hollywood , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor . His career spanned over 20 roles in productions for film and television. He played in movies such as The Howling With Wolves , Generation or Cannons for Cordoba . However, he became known more through television series of the 1960s and 1970s such as Gidget , Partly cheerful, partly cloudy or the series Alias ​​Smith and Jones , where he played the role of Hannibal Heyes (alias Joshua Smith).

life and career

Pete Duel, born in Rochester, New York in 1940, the son of a doctor, took classes at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York from 1957 to 1961 . In 1963 Duel moved to West Hollywood to work in the film business. At the beginning he had small appearances in episodes of various TV series, before he impersonated the role of John Cooper in 23 episodes next to actress Sally Field in the comedy series Gidget . From 1966 to 1967 he played the main male role in 30 episodes of the US series Partly cheerful, partly cloudy . In July 1967, Pete Duel signed a seven-year contract with Universal Studios . Until the early 1970s, he regularly played guest roles in well-known series, including FBI , The Boss , The People of Shiloh Ranch , Dr. med. Marcus Welby , Thoughtful Stories or The Young Lawyers . In 1971 he stood in front of the camera for 33 episodes in the western series Alias ​​Smith and Jones produced by Glen A. Larson .

He had his few cinema appearances in 1966 in the war drama WIA Wounded in Action as Pvt. Myers, in 1968 alongside Rod Taylor , Claudia Cardinale and Harry Guardino in Joseph Sargent's screen drama The Howl with the Wolves , in 1969 as Walter Owen in the comedy Generation at the side of David Janssen or in 1970 as the guitar-playing gunslinger Andy Rice in the George Peppard West Cannons for Cordoba directed by Paul Wendkos .

Duel died on December 31, 1971 after increasing alcohol consumption and depression at the age of only 31 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Pete Duel was the brother of actor Geoffrey Deuel and singer Pamela Deuel.
