The Peter Friedhofen Chapel is a chapel of the Order of the Brothers of Mercy by Maria Hilf in the old town of Koblenz . This is where the first mother house of the order founded by Peter Friedhofen stood .

history

The chapel was built in 1854 in the courtyard of the former Scholasterie of St. Florin Abbey according to plans by Vincenz Statz and consecrated in 1855 . The founder of the order, Peter Friedhofen, lived in the former scholastery from 1851 onwards and had the chapel built. It was built on a former Roman round tower.

The Order of the Brothers of Mercy from Maria Hilf wants to return to their first mother house in Koblenz. From 2011 to 2013 the building in front of the chapel will be renovated and an annex will be added.

construction

The chapel is an unplastered quarry stone building with neo-Gothic house integration . The exterior is characterized by stepped buttresses surrounding the building with water hammer. The verschieferte steep roof above the main entrance of a tall, modern-clad gable rider crowned.

Inside, the two-axis hall is connected to a retracted, flat, closed choir . The two yokes of the hall have a ribbed vault , which is closed off by keystones . In the choir there is a star rib vault over the yokes , in the keystone of which the Lamb of God is set. The neo-Gothic altar has a figurative attachment depicting the crucifixion and saints related to the order .

Monument protection

The Peter Friedhofen Chapel is a protected cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located in the old town monument zone .

The Peter Friedhofen Chapel has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002 .
