Peter Karl Thurwieser
Peter Karl Thurwieser , contemporary also Peter Carl Thurwieser (born May 30, 1789 in Kramsach , ducal county of Tyrol, but ecclesiastically part of the Archdiocese of Salzburg ; † January 25, 1865 in Salzburg ), was an Austrian Catholic clergyman, meteorologist and alpinist. He worked as a lecturer at the Salzburg Lyceum . He also worked as a mountaineer, who achieved many first ascents in the Austrian Alps , about which he reported in numerous scientific publications. The Thurwieserspitze in the western Ortler Alps is named after him.
biography
Thurwieser was sickly as a child and unsuitable for field work. Therefore he was allowed to devote himself to his spiritual inclinations, studied theology in Salzburg from 1810 to 1812 and was ordained a priest in 1812. Then he was assistant priest in Bergheim and Siezenheim until he became a professor at the Salzburg Lyceum in 1820 . From 1836 he was curator of the Kollegienkirche . In 1865 he died of a roof fall.
Mountaineering achievements
Thurwieser was the first to climb many peaks in the Austrian and Bavarian Alps at a time when mountains were avoided because they were still believed to be the seat of enchanted souls and witches. So he was z. B. the first tourist on the Ankogel , first to climb the Dachstein and Watzmann- Südspitze, as well as the third to climb the Ortler . In 1826, Thurwieser managed the first tourist ascent of the Ackerlspitze in the Wilder Kaiser, as well as the first verifiable ascent of the Hochkönig via today's normal route from Arthurhaus via the Übergossene Alm to the summit. For the first time he systematically researched and developed many mountain regions.
