Peter David Krukenberg (born February 14, 1787 in Königslutter , †  December 13, 1865 in Halle / Saale ) was a German physician and clinician.

Life

After attending the school in his hometown and the grammar school in Braunschweig , Krukenberg entered the Collegium anatomico-chirurgicum (later the Carolinum) in 1804 . He then studied medicine at the University of Göttingen from 1808 . Here he received his doctorate in medicine and surgery in 1810 with the dissertation "De cancro bulbi oculi humani". In 1811 he moved to the newly founded University of Berlin . There he joined the physician Johann Christian Reil , whose daughter he married in 1815. In the Wars of Liberation in 1813/15 he joined the Lützow Freikorps , first as a soldier, then as a doctor.

In 1814, Krukenberg was appointed associate professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Halle and gave lectures on therapy. He also temporarily headed the university clinic. He passed the state examination in Berlin in 1815. He only held this professorship until 1816, because he was planning to set up an "outpatient clinic". He opened this polyclinic with government support on May 13, 1816 in his house, Brüderstraße 5, into which he integrated the city hospital for the poor. In the same year he joined the Masonic lodge to the three swords . In 1822 he was appointed full professor of pathology and therapy and director of the university clinic in Halle. The construction of this clinic on Domplatz, which he called for, also fell during his term of office. Today the building houses the university's zoological institute. After his departure as director in 1856, he continued his lectures until 1861.

In addition to his outstanding scientific work, his particular merits are his activities with regard to the improved expansion of clinical facilities. He integrated clinical training in the subjects of surgery, gynecology, psychiatry, etc. into the university, making Halle a model for other German universities. In 1857 he brought 5000 thalers of his fortune into a foundation that was supposed to support young doctors in their scientific training.

honors and awards

For his achievements, Krukenberg was honored with the title of Privy Councilor and the Red Eagle Order 2nd Class with a Star. His grave (Dept. I No. 292/293) is on the Stadtgottesacker in Halle. In honor of Krukenberg, a street in Halle (Saale) was named after him. In 1858 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
