Peter Horn Werner (1908–1969)

Peter Horn (born April 8, 1908 in Munich , † April 11, 1969 in Santiago de Chile ) was a German - Chilean sculptor in the field of sacred art .

Live and act

Horn studied at the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with the sculptors Heinrich Waderé and Meike Blecker .

He came to Chile in 1932 through a misunderstanding. He was hoping for an alleged scholarship from the bishop of the Archdiocese of La Serena in the Chilean coastal city of La Serena , although it turned out that the bishop was not looking for artists, but people who felt called to a religious life.

To earn his way back home, he began to paint the ceilings and walls of churches and was so successful that he was busy for the next four years.

After spending a year in his home country, he joined the Swiss Abroad living in Osorno in 1937 , who were granted Chilean civil rights by the government. At that time Peter Horn carved the vow of the group in wood in the vestibule of the German School Osorno.

When he returned to Germany, the war began and he had to do military service in Poland and France . He was later assigned as an interpreter to the Blue Division fighting in Russia with Spanish volunteers and was taken prisoner by the Soviets . There he devoted himself to the art of carving , where he also used horse bones for lack of wood.

After the war he first settled in Ried im Innkreis and later moved with his families to Passau . In 1950 he decided to emigrate permanently to Chile, where he was very productive until his death in 1969.

He lived and worked again in Osorno and in 1957 moved to the capital Santiago de Chile. His works were widely distributed in Chile.

His now best-known works include his work in and around the Chapel of the Conception of the Virgin Mary in San Christóbal on the summit of Cerro San Christóbal . In the course of restoration work between 2007 and 2010 (costs around 130,000 euros), comparative studies with other works by Horn in Chile and memories of one of his sons, Gabriel, established the authorship of the murals, reliefs and sculptures in and outside the temple. These were originally attributed to the Chilean painter Pedro Subercaseaux Errázuriz .

Horn was married to the painter Josefine Feja-Horn (* 1913) from Ried im Innkreis . The two had seven children, including the sculptor Miguel Horn .
