Peter Kistler († around 1480 ) was a master butcher and mayor of Bern .

The master butcher Peter Kistler sat from 1440 the Grand Council, was in 1449 bailiff of Trachselwald , in 1452 a member of the Small Council, 1458 Venner for butchers and 1470 Schultheiss . He was Bern's envoy to the Diet . Like many others, Kistler was one of the social climbers of the 15th century. His career is remarkable. Although himself a Twingherr zu Goldbach , he went down in history as a bitter opponent of the Bernese Twingherren and nobles. He tried to push established magistrates out of office in order to get to the highest positions.

The picture of the subversive butcher Peter Kistler, often drawn, is wrong. Like many others, Kistler was a notable who, however, had not yet achieved the desired social status. This is particularly evident in the academic and spiritual career of his son Peter († 1492), who studied in Basel and Paris , was provost of the Mauritian monastery in Zofingen from 1476 to 1492 and dean of the collegiate monastery of St. Vincent in Bern from 1487 to 1492. He was also a Twingherr zu Holligen .
