Peter Klaus

Peter Klaus (born March 9, 1944 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a German economist and university professor emeritus .

Life

After graduating from the Dürer secondary school in Nuremberg in 1963 , Klaus completed an apprenticeship as a forwarding agent in his father's general cargo forwarding company Kraftverkehr Klaus from 1964 to 1966 . In 1968 he completed his studies in business administration at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg with a degree in business administration. Klaus worked for his father's forwarding company until the end of the 1970s, including as managing partner from 1972. In 1977 the company was sold to Unilever . In 1974 Klaus took part in the “Program for Management Development” at Harvard Business School .

From 1979 to 1982 Klaus studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he graduated with a Master of Science (Transportation) . At the same time, he received his doctorate as Doctor of Business Administration at Boston University until 1983 . As early as 1982 he accepted a professorship for business administration at Pforzheim University , which he held until 1995. At the same time, in 1990 Klaus accepted a position as a university professor at the newly established chair for business administration, especially logistics, at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.

In 1995 Klaus became head of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft working group for Supply Chain Services SCS (formerly: Technologies in the Logistics Service Industry, ATL) in Nuremberg. This activity ended in 2009. However, Klaus is still active as a scientific advisory board.

Klaus retired in spring 2009. He then continued teaching at the Georgia Institute of Technology .

Research priorities

Klaus's main areas of activity are business logistics . This includes in particular applications of business and logistical knowledge on tasks in transport and traffic as well as questions of logistics system design, rationalization, organization, decision support, as well as the strategic and operational management of logistics systems.

Klaus gained special attention through the publication of the study “Top 100 of Logistics”, in which he for the first time expressed in figures the size and importance of the German logistics industry as the third largest branch of the economy in Germany.

  • 2005 to 2016: Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Grieshaber Logistics Group
  • 2005 to 2012: Co-founder and editor-in-chief of the journal "Logistics Research"
  • Since 2003: Member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Logistics Association
  • Co-editor and secretary of the magazine "Logistik Management"
