Peter Ludwig von Donatz

Peter Ludwig von Donatz (born September 20, 1782 in Valenza , Piedmont ; † August 12, 1849 in Chur ) was a Swiss military and commander in chief of the federal troops during the second free march of 1845.

As early as 1799 he was doing foreign military service, first for England, and from 1806 for France. Von Donatz was involved in the Russian campaign in 1812 and after the Battle of the Beresina led the rest of the Swiss units to Vilnius . After he had held command in 1845, he became commander of the 3rd Army Division under General Guillaume-Henri Dufour in the 1847 Sonderbund War .
