Peter Michael Boehm
Peter Michael Boehm (* 1954 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian diplomat and politician . From 2008 to 2012 he was ambassador to Germany . He was then appointed State Secretary in the Canadian Foreign Ministry. He was then State Secretary for International Development and State Secretary as well as Sherpa for the G7 summit in La Malbaie 2018 . He has been an independent Senator for Ontario in the Canadian Senate since 2018 .
Life
His parents, Michael and Anna Boehm, née Markus, come from Transylvania , where they belonged to the German-speaking minority before they emigrated to Canada. Boehm holds a BA in English and History from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo , holds an MA in International Relations from Carleton University in Ottawa and a PhD in history from the University of Edinburgh , Scotland. Boehm is married to his wife Julia Weyand and they have four children.
In his diplomatic career, Boehm was the director of America, North America and Consular Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, where he also served as the first chief political and economic adviser. 1997–2001 he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington. From 2001-2004 he was envoy for politics, culture and public relations at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC
He has held various positions in the ministry and has also worked in the Canadian embassies in Havana and San José . In 1993 Boehm received the Canadian Foreign Service Officer Award for his work for peace in Central America . He was also the coordinator of the America summits in Santiago and Québec City, special envoy of the OAS democratization mission in Peru and personal representative ( Sherpa ) of the prime minister at the Mar del Plata summit in 2005. From 2005 to 2008 he was in charge of the organization the summit of North American leaders. With the Outstanding Achievement Award , he was given the highest honor in the Canadian public service.
From July 2008 to December 2012, Boehm was the Canadian ambassador in Berlin . In December 2012, he was appointed to Ottawa, where he took the position of Secretary of State in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In 2016 he became State Secretary for International Development and in 2017 State Secretary for the G7 Summit in La Malbaie 2018 and Deputy Prime Minister ( Sherpa ) for the upcoming meeting. In September 2018, he resigned from that position and retired from the Canadian public service. On October 3, 2018, he was named Independent Senator for the Province of Ontario on the proposal of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau . Within the Canadian Senate, he joined the Independent Senators Group .
