Peter Rabe

Peter Rabe (born November 10, 1951 in Schwarmstedt ; † March 31, 2018 ) was a German politician ( SPD ). From 1990 to 2003 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament .

Life

Peter Rabe obtained his higher education entrance qualification at the Domgymnasium Verden in 1970, a year after he had obtained the high school diploma as part of a student exchange program in Michigan (USA) . He served in the German Navy until 1973 and was a lieutenant at sea in the reserve. He then studied law and political science in Marburg and Bonn with a stay abroad in Washington, DC and Chicago . The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung scholarship holder passed his first state examination in 1979 in Bonn and then worked from 1980 to 1981 at the University of Bonn as a research assistant at the chair for constitutional and international law. He completed his legal clerkship in the higher regional court district of Celle . Following the second state examination in 1983, he worked in a Walsrode law firm, and finally he was appointed as a notary in 1993.

He was married and has two children.

Peter Rabe joined the SPD in 1970 and later became deputy chairman in what was then the SPD sub-district of Soltau-Fallingbostel. In 1981 he became a member of the council of the city of Rethem (Aller) and in 1986 council member of the joint municipality of Rethem / Aller . As a member of the district council in the district of Soltau-Fallingbostel, he worked from 1991, among other things, as deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

From 1990 to 2003 he was a directly elected member of the Fallingbostel constituency of the Lower Saxony state parliament (12th to 14th electoral term). In the state parliament he was considered a legal expert. He was a member of the Committee on Federal and European Affairs. He was also chairman of two parliamentary committees of inquiry : in 1993 on submarine deals with Taiwan and in 2000 on the misconduct of the resigned Prime Minister Gerhard Glogowski . From 1994 on, Peter Rabe was a member of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe .

In 2005 Rabe was honored with the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit ; In 2017 he received the Willy Brandt Medal .
