Peter Schulz (born April 29, 1929 in Basel ) is a Swiss theologian , editor , publisher and founding director of the Swiss School of Journalism MAZ . He is the founder and director of the Akademie 91 Zentralschweiz Foundation, founder of the Pro Libro Lucerne publishing house and founder of the Lucerne Literature Society.

Life

Peter Schulz grew up in Basel. He studied theology in Basel and Marburg an der Lahn . He worked as a religion teacher and vicar in Basel, Uster , Pontresina and Nidau .

From 1956 to 1968 Peter Schulz worked as a reformed pastor in Meggen , Weggis and Vitznau . In 1963 he initiated the construction of the Rigi Kaltbad mountain church . The architect was Ernst Gisel from Zurich.

His rhetorical skills were noticeable and soon led him to his first appearances on Swiss television, which was still young at the time . Between 1956 and 1966 he spoke regularly on Saturday evenings in the Bellerive studio " The Word for Sunday ". He was one of the first to present it in dialect. Schulz also directed the talk show “Treffpunkt Studio Bellerive”, in which young people discussed personal questions. In addition, he was a member of the editorial team of the church messenger and a member of the board of the «Filmkreis Luzern».

From 1969 to 1973 Peter Schulz was a program employee at Radio DRS in the word and information departments, responsible for the theology, philosophy and psychology. During this time he was also appointed the first radio officer of the Evangelical Reformed Church. He published the book “Sermon outside the church” and introduced the program “Church Today”. In addition, he led discussions with celebrities on Sunday morning on the DRS television together with Annemarie Holenstein .

In 1973 Peter Schulz became the first training manager at Radio DRS. From 1976 he was responsible for the entire training and further education at radio and television DRS. Under his leadership, in addition to new training and further education courses, the first management seminars were developed, and broadcast analyzes and tailor-made workshops were introduced.

In the 1970s and partly afterwards, Peter Schulz also worked as a lecturer for the book club "Dialog bei Ex Libris" and as a lecturer at the journalism seminar at the University of Zurich and Basel . In the army, Peter Schulz was field chaplain captain from 1958 to 1984.

In 1984 Peter Schulz was elected director of the media training center (MAZ) in Kastanienbaum that he had initiated . He headed it until 1996. The MAZ was the first independent journalism school in Switzerland, supported by the SRG, the publishers and the journalists' associations as well as by the city and canton of Lucerne. The MAZ - The Swiss School of Journalism is a Swiss-wide and internationally recognized educational institution. In 2020 it will have 25 permanent employees and over 300 lecturers.

During his work at the MAZ, Peter Schulz launched the book series Schriften zur Medienpraxis at Verlag Sauerländer . Many publications in the series were created at the suggestion of Peter Schulz. In 1991, in the Swiss anniversary year, Peter Schulz initiated the Academy 91 Central Switzerland Foundation with the aim of establishing a University of Lucerne with three faculties.

In 1993 he established the Haus am See foundation in Kastanienbaum, whose house serves as a refuge for scientists and artists. From 1993 to 1997 Peter Schulz headed the newly created Lucerne section of the Central Switzerland radio and television cooperative.

In 1994, Peter Schulz organized the first media symposium in Lucerne together with Kurt Imhof from the University of Zurich. The findings from the presentations and discussions first appeared in the Seismo Verlag , later in the Westdeutscher Verlag and Springer Verlag . In 2020 there will be 18 academic volumes on current media issues.

Between 1995 and 1998, Peter Schulz and Kurt Imhof published three volumes on current media topics in the Seismo Verlag in connection with the Lucerne Media Symposium.

From 1996 to 2007 Peter Schulz was the first ombudsman of the “Neue Luzerner Zeitung” and President of the Readership Council. From 1996 to 2005 he was the editor of the book series «Culture in Central Switzerland» at the Maihof publishing house .

In 2005 Peter Schulz became a publisher and founded the Pro Libro publishing house for literature and non-fiction books from Central Switzerland. In this publishing house he also continued his book series on culture in Central Switzerland. In 2007, Peter Schulz expanded the subject area of ​​the publishing house and began a twelve-volume series entitled “Literature of the 20th Century” with authors such as Clemens Mettler , Martin Stadler , Heinrich Federer and Gertrud Leutenegger . The publisher has published over 90 works so far. In 2017 he handed over the management of the publishing house to Therese Schilter.

In 2012 Peter Schulz founded the Lucerne Literature Society, which he headed until 2018.
