About 1.6 km west of the village there is the rock church Zoodochos Pigi with post-Byzantine frescoes by the hagiographer Dimitrios Kakavas from around 1610. In the district of Chania Agiou Vasiliou there is a Peloponnese railway station - the operation was stopped in 2007.
Agios Vasilios is famous for its honey. Olives, apricots, wheat, wine, tobacco and vegetables are also grown here.
history
prehistory
The area around Agios Vasilios was already settled in prehistoric times, as the excavations on the Zygouries and Ambelakia hills to the west of the village show. Another indication of the early settlement are obsidian finds south of Agios Sostis in the cave of Andonis near Boubakia, on the Chouni pass and at the caves on Mount Dafnias. In Mycenaean times there was a fortification on Dafnias, south of Agios Vasilios, which secured the Chouni Pass and thus the road from Zygouries over the Arachneo Mountains to Mycenae .
Roman time
As the Roman graves on Ambelakia prove, there was also a settlement nearby at that time. However, it has not yet been located. In the second quarter of the 2nd century, Emperor Hadrian had the Corinth aqueduct . It directed water from Stymfalia to Corinth and also crossed today's Agios Vasilios. Remnants can still be seen to the west of the village at the entrance to the Chouni Pass and in the village on the properties of Kafandaris and Vardakas.
middle Ages
In Byzantine times there was a settlement on the Zygouries hill. It is not known whether this was the predecessor settlement of Agios Vasilios. Between 1204 and 1250 the castle Kastro Agiou Vasiliou was built on Dafnias. It was first mentioned in a document in 1365. In 1377 Agios Vasilios is said to have been the second largest town after Corinth in the Principality of Achaia with 85 houses . In 1463 the castle and the place fell to the Republic of Venice . In 1467, 1469 and 1471 the castle and certainly the place were sacked.
Modern times
In 1700 27 families with 97 citizens lived in Agios Vasilios. In 1836, during the reign of King Otto , Agios Vasilios was declared a municipality. In 1845 the parishes of Agios Vasilios and Archees Kleones were united. In 1912 the village was downgraded to Kinotita with only one commune. In 1972 the district of Agios Dimitrios, today's Chania Agiou Vasiliou, was founded. In 1997 Agios Vasilios was downgraded to a parish and in 2011 to a local community.
