Matwei Evgenyevich Safonov ( Russian Матвей Евгеньевич Сафонов ; English transcription: Matvei Yevgenyevich Safonov ; born February 26, 1999 in Stavropol ) is a Russian football goalkeeper who is under contract with the first division club FK Krasnodar . He has been the Russian U21 international since September 2018 .

Career

Matwei Safonow comes from the youth department of FK Krasnodar and was in the first team's matchday squad eight times in the 2016/17 season . In the following season 2017/18 he became the goalkeeper in the U20 team and was still listed more often in the men's matchday squad. On August 13, 2017 (6th matchday) he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Amkar Perm in the top Russian division , when he replaced the injured Andrei Sinitsyn for a game. This mission remained his only one with the first team in this 2017/18 season , while he was on the field in 22 U20 league games.

In the following season 2018/19 he established himself as a regular player in the reserve team FK Krasnodar-2 in the second-highest Russian division , but was promoted to the first team at the end of October 2018. In mid-November he replaced Sinitsyn for the first time and in the second half of the season he became the undisputed regular goalkeeper under head coach Murad Musayev . He finished the season with 14 league games in the first and 16 league games in the reserve team. In the 2019/20 season he retained his status as a regular goalkeeper and developed alongside Alexander Maximenko as the second great Russian goalkeeper.

National team

In March 2014, Matwei Safonov played an international match for the Russian U15 national team . Between August 2014 and June 2015 he made seven friendly international matches for the U16s . From August 2015 to March 2016, he was in nine games of the U17 , in which he was the captain in all of the grass. From August 2016 to April 2017 he played six test matches for the U18s . Between October and November 2017 he played three games for the U19s .

Safonov has been the Russian U21 international since September 2018 and was most recently number one ahead of Alexander Maximenko.
