In 1559 Ulner became coadjutor , in 1561 abbot of the Berge monastery near Magdeburg. Under his direction the rebuilding of the monastery took place after the destruction of 1546 during the Schmalkaldic War and the re-establishment of the library . In addition to many buildings, the monastery church was also newly built.

With a Lutheran sermon on August 25, 1565, he led the monastery into the Reformation . Berge monastery became a Protestant monastery . Ulner was the first prelate in the Archbishopric of Magdeburg to openly confess to the new faith. In the same year Ulner founded the monastery school. Ulner held the office of abbot for 34 years and led the important Berge monastery to a new bloom.

In 1569, Duke commissioned Julius of Brunswick next to Martin Chemnitz and Jacob Andreä also Ulner with the reformation of the churches in Brunswick country.

On Peter and Paul Day 1573 Ulner married Margaretha, daughter of Magdeburg city treasurer Hans Westphal. The marriage resulted in five well-known children (order not confirmed): Catharina, Joachim, Margaretha, Anna and Agnesa. Allegedly Abbot Peter also had a natural son of the same name (that is, born out of wedlock).

Since 1583 Ulner was also part of the commission for visiting churches in the diocese of Magdeburg.
