The Altenmarkt parish church in Weitensfeld is consecrated to St. Aemilian . Altenmarkt was one of the eight original parishes of the Diocese of Gurk and was founded around 1040 by a "pious woman Imma", probably the grandmother of Hemma von Gurk . The church is surrounded by a formerly fortified cemetery wall, the original height of which is only preserved in the south-east corner next to the Romanesque round barn .

Building description

The church is a late Gothic building from the 15th century, in the nave walls of which there are still remains of the previous Romanesque building. The nave facades have an architectural decor, unique for Carinthia, made of painted brown and gray corner cuboids with circular shapes on the sides as well as friezes and window frames. Three-tiered buttresses support the raised, recessed choir from the first half of the 15th century. There is a sacristy annex on the north side of the choir . The tower on the south side of the choir with two or three-lane Gothic tracery windows was raised by the clock floor in the Baroque period and in 1873 provided with the eight-sided spire with a gable wreath. One bell dates from the 15th century, Hieronymus Egker cast a second in 1528, and a third is marked 1530. The roofs of the church are covered with Steinplattl. The remains of the frescoes on the north-eastern end wall of the choir probably represent a Last Judgment from the second half of the 15th century, the late Gothic St. Christopher fresco on the south wall of the nave is partially whitewashed. In addition to the simple Gothic south portal, the church has a profiled west portal. The tracery windows on the south and west sides of the nave and in the end of the choir have two lanes.

Inside, the nave with a ribbed vault from the second half of the 15th century is divided into four bays by strong grooved wall pillars with round templates . The three-axis west gallery is vaulted with cross ribs. The wooden gallery porch with images of the apostles on the parapet dates from the 17th century. The organ was built in the middle of the 17th century. A pointed triumphal arch connects the nave and the single -bay choir with a five-eighth end . In the choir, a ribbed vault rests on console services , with two consoles and the keystones in relief. The stained glass from the mid-15th century in the choir windows show the Annunciation as well as the saints Aemilian and Rupert . The doors to the sacristy and the tower ground floor have iron fittings. The late Gothic font was built in the 15th century.

Murals

The paintings in the choir vault with the evangelist symbols and foliage decorations were made in the second quarter of the 15th century. The protective mantle Madonna on the left triumphal arch wall, painted around 1450/60 , is attributed to Thomas von Villach . On the right triumphal arch wall is a Madonna with the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul , created in the last quarter of the 15th century and uncovered in 1954 .

Facility

The baroque high altar with a rich cartilage frame was created by Johann Seitlinger in the middle of the 17th century . In the central niche, the altar hides a Gothic Madonna carved in Baroque style. The late Gothic statues of Saints Aemilian, John the Baptist and James , carved in the younger Villach workshop around 1510 , come from an altar that is no longer preserved. The top of the high altar is a mercy seat , the crown is a crucifixion group with Mary and John .

The right side altar consists of the predella of a former winged altar . Next to the handkerchief of Christ, the coats of arms of Hans Prieger and Caspar Fux from 1587 are depicted on it. The pulpit with the painted representations of the evangelists in the parapet was built in the middle of the 18th century. A large late Gothic crucifix from the first quarter of the 16th century hangs on the north wall of the nave .

The choir stalls with coat of arms are marked with 1573, the prayer benches in the nave with flat carvings on the cheeks were made around 1520. A baroque console statue of St. Peter from the first half of the 18th century and a holy water bowl marked with 1748 complete the furnishings of the church.

Karner

The Karner is a Romanesque round building without apses with a conical roof and three arched windows on the south side. The octagonal interior on the main floor has a star vault with plaster ridges resting on a central column. The vault paintings show tendrils, evangelist symbols and saints. The basement is used as an ossuary , the upper floor is equipped with loopholes as a defensive floor .

Some baroque wrought iron crosses from the 18th century can be seen in the cemetery.
