The Roman Catholic parish church Au in Vorarlberg is located in the municipality of Au in the Bregenz Forest . The parish church , consecrated to St. Leonhard of Limoges , belongs to the Hinterwald dean's office in the Feldkirch diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

In 1372, a chapel was named for the original Reuthe branch , and in 1390 it was elevated to a parish. The parish church was consecrated in 1391 and expanded in 1443. In 1494 a new building followed, which was extended in 1788. A restoration took place from 1922 to 1924. In 1981/1982 the church was restored outside and 1982/1983 inside.

architecture

The church is surrounded to the northeast by a walled cemetery. The Gothic church was extended in baroque style at the end of the 18th century.

The nave and the retracted choir, without any three-dimensional structure, stand on a high, brick-walled plinth. The southern nave wall has a flat arch portal. The gable facade with a brick porch under a hipped roof with a triangular gable has a grooved pointed arch portal with the Vorarlberg coat of arms at the top. The arched portal to the nave has wooden doors with reliefs Katharina left and Leonhard right by Gebhard Moosbrugger (1922). The north tower has a pointed gable helmet. To the east of the tower there is a two-storey sacristy under a pent roof.

The hall space under a flat barrel vault with short stitch caps has five flat arched windows with stucco crowns on each long side. The straight west gallery stands on two pillars. The retracted choir arch has a stucco crown with a clock. The retracted choir with a three-eighth closure has a flat barrel vault with short stitch caps.

Memorial plaque for the Au guild

The fresco in the choir with the offering in the temple was painted by Johann Jakob Spieler (1778). The frescoes in the nave show Vorarlbergia sancta and the Entombment of Christ, in a stitch cap spandrels St. Elisabeth, St. Agnes and Guardian Angel on the left and Blessed Hermann Josef, St. Aloysius, St. Isidore on the right, backwards in cartouches are putti with musical instruments. Johann Jakob Rüf (1778) created the rich stucco. The glass paintings Joachim, Anna and Jesus in the temple in the choir were created by the Tyrolean glass painting company .

The war memorial was created by Kaspar Albrecht in 1934 . Kaspar Albrecht created a memorial plaque for the Au Guild in 1957.

Furnishing

The high altar with a structure by Marggraf and Bertle from around 1890 carries a crucifix with Maria and Johannes and shows altar pictures as alternating pictures: Resurrection of Christ and Good Shepherd by Wendelin Moosbrugger . There is a relic of St. Pius.

The left side altar with two columns, straight entablature and the same attachment made of Auer (Schnepfauer) marble was created by Hans Natter and Bartholomäus Schreck (1652) after a foundation by the municipality of Au. It shows the altarpiece of the Rosary Madonna with Saints. Dominic and Catherine of Siena by Josef Reich (1925) and a top picture of St. Catherine (1652). The right side altar was built by Rudolf Ober (1725), it bears the altar relief Death of Joseph by the sculptor Dominikus Trenkwalder (1885) and has reliefs of King David and St. James.

The marble font is from 1652. The stations of the cross in stucco medallions are from the 17th century. Michael Lechleitner (1669) created the pulpit with figures of the evangelists . The confessionals in the choir were created by Johann Michael Kaufmann (1792). The gallery parapet shows paintings of St. Cecilia and Angels. There are paintings in oval medallions by the painters Martin von Feuerstein and Karl Wurm (1923) in the choir and nave . Herbert Albrecht (1983) created the people's altar .

The organ on the gallery

The organ was built in 1800 by the Alsatian organ builder Joseph Bergöntzle (1754–1819), who mainly worked in Alsace and Vorarlberg. The instrument was modified by Anton Behmann in 1893 .
