The Roman Catholic parish church Feldkirch-Gisingen is in the district Gisingen the municipality of Feldkirch in District Feldkirch in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to Saint Sebastian and belongs to the Feldkirch deanery in the Feldkirch diocese . The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).

Location description

The church is in the cluster village of Gisingen in the northwest of the city center of Feldkirch. To the west the church is surrounded by a cemetery.

history

The settlement was first mentioned in 1045 as "Kisingun". In 1178 it was mentioned as "Gisingin". In 1630 a chapel was built, which was consecrated in 1634. In place of the chapel, a new church was built in 1864 and 1865 and consecrated in 1866. The church was a branch church of the Altenstadt parish until 1893 and was then elevated to an independent parish church. This church was extended in 1922 according to plans by Willy Braun in the nave and two side aisles.

Church exterior

The church is a neo-Romanesque basilica with a retracted choir. The north tower has a pointed gable helmet. The sacristy is attached to the south of the choir. The gable facade is structured by corner pilasters. Above the arched portal and the straight cornice is an arched niche with a window. On the side of the arched niche there are rectangular windows, on the side of the portal circular windows. To the left of the gable facade is a two-storey extension that houses the staircase to the gallery. The nave walls have arched windows, the side aisles are broken through by circular windows in arched arcades. In the west of the south aisle is a hewn structure with the gallery stairway. The church tower has arched sound windows .

Church interior

Inside, the church forms a barrel-vaulted sacred space with low, flat-roofed side aisles, which are opened to the nave through flat arched arcades. The barrel vault of the nave is divided into cassette fields by four wide belt arches with rosettes . The belt arches rest on pillars. A retracted, flat arched triumphal arch separates the nave from the choir. This ends in the 3/8 end and is flat covered. In the west of the central nave is a three-axle, two-bay, straight gallery over arched arcades. The flat ceiling is deepened at this point. The upper gallery rests on two wooden supports. On the right in the choir is a loggia . To the right and left of the choir are the entrances to the tower and sacristy. On the right side of the nave there is an entrance to the sacristy.

The frescoes in the choir date from 1948. They represent the mercy seat . St. Martin and St. Sebastian are depicted on the left wall of the choir . The holy figures are by Hans Bertle from 1931. In the choir arch reveal “Christ in the Vineyard” is depicted on the left and the “Good Shepherd and the symbols of the seven sacraments” on the right. In the nave, “Jesus with children” is depicted in the front, the “Last Supper” in the middle and “You are Peter” in the form of frescoes by Andreas Scheidbach .

The glass paintings show St. Catherine on the left side of the choir , and St. Andrew on the right . They were made in the Tyrolean glass painting establishment in 1923 .

Furnishing

The high altar is a neo-Romanesque structure from around 1860. The altarpiece shows the " Assumption of Mary ". It was painted by Franz Xaver Bobleter in 1865 and restored by L. Scheel in 1931 . The picture is flanked by figures of saints. There is a statue of St. Paul on the left and a figure of St. Peter on the right . Both figures were created around 1860. The structure of the tabernacle is high. The “ Annunciation of Mary ” is depicted in the niche . A Lourdes Madonna stands on the left side altar. In front of it is a crucifix by Erhard from 1975. On the right side altar is a Sacred Heart with a relief of the four Evangelists by Fidelis Rudhart from 1898. The altar in the left aisle is a neo-baroque structure with figures of St. Mary , Jesus and of St. John by F. Rebholz . The altar in the right aisle is also a neo-baroque structure. A relief of the Holy Family is depicted on it. The relief comes from Gustav Bachmann from 1926. He also created the confessionals between 1926 and 1930. A figure of St. Theresa dates from 1930.
