Portrait of Franz Xaver Bobleter

Franz Xaver Bobleter (born August 6, 1800 in Feldkirch , † May 2, 1869 in Feldkirch) was an Austrian painter.

The best-known works of Bobleter are his numerous portraits and landscapes in the Biedermeier style. His religious sculptures also reveal influences of the classicist and Nazarene styles. Today Bobleter is best known as the “house painter” of the Upper Austrian scythe-smith families of the Biedermeier period.

Live and act

Bobleter grew up in Feldkirch as the grandson of the painter Joseph Anton Bobleter, who had immigrated from Dornbirn . His great-uncle was the barrel painter Johann Michael Bildstein , his great-grandfather the Feldkirch painter Franz Joseph Walser . In November 1821 he traveled to Vienna via Salzburg on a loan from the city of Feldkirch , where he was tutored by the painters Joseph Anton Rhomberg and Johann Zitterer until he was accepted at the academy . During his studies (1822 to 1826) he carried out numerous commissions for portraits and altarpieces, for example for the priest house church in Vienna (1825), the churches of Stockerau, Fischamend, Enzersdorf, Schwadron and Großwetzdorf. In the summer of 1825 he went on a trip to Styria and in 1826 to the Wachau, where he made nature studies and miniature portraits. In 1827 two of his altarpieces were awarded the diploma of the Academy for History Painting.

On the journey from his place of study in Vienna to his homeland in Vorarlberg, he stopped briefly in Linz in May 1827 to visit a friend, the magistrate Ferdinand von Nagel, to paint a few pictures and to earn some money. He finally stayed - with interruptions - until 1846. After a short stay in the Vorarlberg homeland in 1828, he settled in Linz as a freelance artist and lived at Am Wasser No. 243 . From 1829 he drew and lithographed for the lithographic institute of Josef Hafner , with whom he had been friends since studying together at the Vienna Academy. In 1830 he got to know the Upper Austrian scythe factory Caspar Zeitlinger , who invited him to portray him and his family.

“I just now remember very vividly how, in accordance with your wishes, I soon came to you in that marvelous paradisiacal region and, by being warmly welcomed in your house, passed business and pleasure of all kinds alternately throughout the summer. You, your relatives, relatives and friends then induced me to return to a migratory bird for many years to come, and I confess in truth that it always happened with joy and pleasure. "

- FX Bobleter

The Zeitlinger , who was roughly the same age, became the artist's friend and patron , who rose to become the preferred portraitist of the nobility, the citizens of Linz and the Upper Austrian scythe trades. In the following years Bobleter created numerous portraits of the scythe-smith families Zeitlinger , Weinmeister , Piesslinger and Koller , which gave him respect and wealth. For example, according to the information in his catalog raisonné, he received 800 guilders for a portrait of the Koller family. In 1831 and 1832 he alternated between Kirchdorf an der Krems and Linz and traveled to Vienna to relax. In 1833 and 1834, at the invitation of Prince Schwarzenberg, he painted several portraits in Budweis and Krumau . Back in Linz, on the occasion of the death of Emperor Franz I, he created a series of portraits of his successor Ferdinand I. In 1838 a large group picture of the Weinmeister family from Spital am Pyhrn was created . In the following years, in addition to portrait painting, Bobleter increasingly devoted himself to depicting landscapes and restoring images of saints.

In 1846 Bobleter left his studio at Linz Zollamtsstrasse 3 and returned to his hometown Feldkirch, where he continued to work as a portrait and landscape painter, but also as a restorer and created several sacred pictures and frescoes. From Feldkirch he first sent the exhibition of the Upper Austrian Art Association in 1852 . Bobleter's works can be found, for example, in the Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz, in the Schattenburg Museum in Feldkirch, in Upper Austria. Landesmuseum in Linz, and in Upper Austria. Scythe forge museum in Micheldorf. In addition, many of his works have been preserved in private ownership in Upper Austria and Vorarlberg.
