history

The church, first mentioned in 1144, is the oldest parish church in the Grazer Feld. From 1147 to 1782 the church was a branch church of the parish church Maria im Elend zu Straßgang . In 1532 the church was burned down by the Turks and rebuilt in 1545. From 1660 to 1963 the tower was renewed and raised after a lightning strike and in 1745 it was equipped with an onion helmet.

architecture

The three-bay nave with retracted triumphal arch is followed by a single-bay late Gothic choir with a 5/8 end . The nave and choir have a ribbed vault . In the nave, the keystones are in the form of a heraldic shield, in the middle yoke is a holy spirit hole . Romanesque parts of the wall have been preserved in the nave walls. Around 1670, a single-yoke groin-vaulted chapel was added to each side of the eastern nave yoke. The five-story tower is placed slightly into the facade to the west of the nave. It has Romanesque windows on the second floor. The top floor of the tower is eight-sided, has a cranked, curved cornice, and above it a rich onion helmet with a lantern. The baroque, barrel-vaulted stab cap is built to the north of the choir and has an oratory on the upper floor . During the restoration from 1975 to 1976, Roman stones from the 2nd century were exposed during the construction of the church and figurative Roman stones were freely installed on the south wall of the church.

Furnishing

The high altar from the end of the 18th century with two statues of St. Sebastian and St. Roch bears the altarpiece Baptism of Christ by Joseph Alexander Wonsidler from 1846. In the north chapel there are figures by Hans and Walter Neuböck from 1937, the free-standing marble tabernacle from 1934. During the church restoration from 1975 to 1976, the pulpit from the end of the 17th century was dismantled, the basket became an ambo, and the sounding lid became a people's altar. A life-size figure of Saint Blaise is documented by the sculptor Jakob Peyer from 1758. There is a baroque font .
