history

Interior of the parish church

Until around 1600 Lauerz was a branch of the Schwyz parish and owned a St. Theodul chapel. This burned down in 1506 and was rebuilt in 1508/1509 in the same place.

After the creation of the independent parish of Lauerz, the first parish church was built between 1675 and 1684. In the village fire of 1764, it remained unscathed. It was almost completely destroyed in the landslide on September 2, 1806, which claimed 23 lives in Lauerz. The tower remained standing, but had to be demolished because of the risk of collapse.

In 1807 the construction of the new church began according to plans by Brother Jakob Nater from Einsiedeln Abbey . A description of the destruction and reconstruction was soldered into the tower ball. The consecration of the church with St. Nicholas of Myra as patron took place in 1810. In 1820 Lauerz received side altars, pulpit and chairs as a gift from the former parish church in Gersau. 1825 took Bishop Karl Rudolf von Buol-Schauenstein the consecration of the new church before.

The tower ball was renewed in 1847 and an inscription with events since 1810 was added. The same thing happened in 1887 when the tower roof was covered with copper. During an extensive interior renovation in 1917, several ceiling paintings were added. In 1925 the plastering of the tower was renewed. Again a writing was added to the tower ball. The first organ from 1853 was expanded and renewed in 1928.

A comprehensive interior and exterior renovation took place in 1982/1984, at the end of which in 1984 the last of the four bells was consecrated. In addition, a new organ was installed by Metzler Orgelbau .

Works of art

The Pietà, the miraculous image of the Mother of Sorrows, above the high altar

The Lauerzer Pietà , a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows , was made around 1500 and was already intact when the chapel burned in 1506. The decoration of the church includes depictions of all seven pains of Mary through ceiling or wall paintings from 1917. The Pietà above the high altar represents the sixth pain of Mary.

The young Maria with her parents Joachim and Anna are depicted on the left side altar, and St. Sebastian on the cross on the right side altar . Above the door to the church tower, a picture shows Niklaus von Flüe holding his hand protectively over Lauerz. This picture was made after the Second World War due to Brother Klaus' popularity as the state saint.

The statues of saints on the side altar on the left side of the woman depict Agatha , the Archangel Michael and Katharina from left to right . The side altar on the right side of the man shows Jodokus , Wendelin and Nepomuk . Saints Anthony and Marcellus face each other in the choir . At the high altar, St. Nicholas of Myra as patron of the church and St. Theodul as patron of the former chapel flank the Pietà.
