Phare des Héaux de Bréhat is the name of a lighthouse in the municipality of Tréguier in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany . It has a range of 15 nautical miles (white) and 11 nautical miles (red and green) and was built by Léonce Reynaud in 1840. Heaux Brehat marks the westernmost point of the bay of Saint-Brieuc , the bypass around the headland Talbert user to access the Trieux - estuary and the island of Brehat .
The lighthouse has been listed as a historic monument of France since May 23, 2011 .
history
In 1831 the Commission for Lighthouses decided to build a lighthouse on the reef in front of the municipality of Tréguier . The strong surf and extreme currents made it difficult to erect a tower on a rock that was underwater at high tide. In April 1834, Augustin Jean Fresnel commissioned the 32-year-old engineer Léonce Reynaud to implement the project. Due to the great experience of the English and Scots in the field of lighthouse construction, Reynauf oriented himself on the two towers Eddystone and Bell Rock .
Numerous difficulties (e.g. various companies terminated the concluded contracts due to the great dangers on the reef) delayed the completion and caused the costs to rise far beyond what had been calculated. The tower alone, without optics and lantern, cost 531,679.28 francs. The fire lit for the first time on February 1, 1840. On June 18, 1903, a white flashing light that flashed every four seconds was installed. In August 1944, the Wehrmacht blew up the top 15 meters of the tower. However, the damage was quickly repaired and the tower - with an additional floor and now 57 meters high - rebuilt. The lighting interval has been increased to five seconds. In 1982 the system was automated.
After the Phare du Four du Croisic (1822), the Héaux de Bréhat lighthouse is the second oldest maritime lighthouse in France.
The lighthouse plays an important role in the French film Mathilde - A great love (2004) by Jean-Pierre Jeunet .
