Philip Kocienski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philip Joseph Kocienski (* 1946 in Troy , New York ) is an American chemist and professor emeritus from the University of Leeds , Great Britain .

Life

Philip Kocienski interest in organic chemistry was during his undergraduate studies at the Northwestern University ( Illinois aroused). He obtained his Ph.D. from Brown University in Providence ( Rhode Island ) in 1971. under the guidance of his doctoral supervisor Joseph Ciabattoni. He worked with George Büchi at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later with Basil Lythgoe at Leeds University in the UK.

From 1979 he taught as a Brotherton Research Lecturer at the University of Leeds. 1985 followed the professorship at the University of Southampton ; In 1990 he took over the Glaxo professorship for chemistry in the same position. In 1997 he was appointed Regius Professor of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow . In 2000 he followed the call to Leeds, where he took over the management of the Institute for Organic Chemistry until his retirement.

research

Kocienski's contributions to chemistry include research into new organometallic syntheses and the application of synthetic methods to the manufacture of complex natural products. The early work with Basil Lythgoe on the stereochemistry of Julia olefination supported the importance of these reactions for organic chemistry. The Julia-Kocienski olefination, a variant of the Julia olefination, is named after Kocienski. His most important contributions can be found in the synthesis of metallic enol ethers ( lithium , copper and nickel ) and their importance in the synthesis of natural agents with biological significance. His complete synthesis of the insect toxin pederin and his work on the immunosuppressant FK 506 gave him the reputation of being one of the leading organic chemists of his time. Korcienski's other work deals with the synthesis of vitamins and antibiotics, fungicides, antiviral and tumor-inhibiting agents, and enzyme inhibitors.

Honors

In 1984 he won the Hickinbottom Fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry and in 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society .
