Philipp Erlacher

Philipp Johann Erlacher (born March 1, 1886 in Radenthein ; † January 29, 1980 in Vienna ) was an Austrian orthopedist .

Life

Philipp Erlacher, a native of Radenthein in Carinthia , devoted himself to the Matura a study of medicine at the University of Graz , which he in 1910 with the acquisition of the academic degree of Dr. med. completed. Erlacher then received an orthopedic surgical training with Fritz Lange in Munich and with Hans Spitzy in Graz.

In 1913, Erlacher took over the management of the orthopedic department of the Graz University Children's Clinic, succeeding Hans Spitzy, and two years later he was drafted as a soldier for the First World War. After the end of the war, Philipp Erlacher returned to Graz, completed his habilitation in orthopedic surgery in 1919 and was appointed associate professor in 1923.

In 1939 Philipp Erlacher moved to Vienna, took over the chair of the retired Hans Spitzy at the University of Vienna and in 1945 was entrusted with the medical management of the Speising Orthopedic Hospital , which he held until his retirement in 1965.

In addition, Erlacher was a founding member of SICOT, the world organization of orthopedic surgery, and from 1949 honorary member and 1954 president of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) .

Erlacher dealt primarily with surgery of peripheral nerves, pediatric surgery, scoliosis and prosthetics . In addition, he published more than 120 treatises on all issues of orthopedics, including his fundamental work "Technique of orthopedic surgery" published in 1928 . The Erlacher-Blount syndrome is named after Walter Putnam Blount.
