The Real Life Guys is a German YouTube channel that was founded in 2016 by Johannes (* June 27, 1997 ) and Philipp Mickenbecker (* June 27, 1997 ; † June 9, 2021 ) from Bickenbach . The identical twin brothers ran it together until 2021. Videos of do-it-yourself projects are regularly uploaded to the channel .

Life

Johannes, Philipp and Elisabeth (Elli) Mickenbecker grew up in a Christian environment, in which they were educated by their parents in home school during their primary school years and only part of their youth went to public schools (Christian School and Marienhöhe School Center ) around 2016 then to be able to take the Abitur. The twins then also began studying environmental engineering , which they broke off after a short time.

On March 10, 2018, Elli Mickenbecker, who had actively participated in almost all of the twins' activities, had a fatal accident shortly before her 19th birthday in a plane crash. Between March and May 2018, the brothers' YouTube channel also took a break, on which only one song by their sister was published during these months.

On October 2, 2020, Philipp Mickenbecker published a video on the joint YouTube channel in which he announced that he had a recurrence of a cancer diagnosed in 2013 for the second time. A television documentary was shot for ARD about Philipp Mickenbecker at the end of 2020. At the beginning of 2021 he also engaged in several public discussions with evangelical and Islamic preachers ( Pierre Vogel ).

On June 9, 2021, Philipp Mickenbecker died of cancer in the hospital.

Purpose and content of your YouTube activities

The aim of the brothers until Philip's death was to use the videos to encourage young people to go into the great outdoors and experience adventures. They are trying to encourage young people not only to spend their time in front of the computer and cell phone. John will continue this.

For this purpose, they upload videos about various projects at irregular intervals in order to give the young people motivation and ideas for their own projects. They have largely acquired the knowledge for the implementation themselves and learned from YouTube tutorials.

Projects

The brothers carried out many projects that also attracted media attention. They are supported by numerous friends. Bathtubs serve as the starting point for many of their projects.

Flying bathtub

In 2018 the brothers converted a bathtub into a manned drone and used it to carry out one of the first manned drone flights in Germany. Among other things, they flew with this to the bakery shop. In consultation with the Federal Aviation Office, the drone was designed for a maximum altitude of 30 meters so that no permits are required. During the construction, they also worked with the drone manufacturer exabotix. The drone has a flight time of approx. 6 minutes. It has six 20 hp motors, each of which drives a rotor , making it possible to transport a total weight of 140 kg.

Bathtub submarine

In 2017 they built a manned submarine out of bathtubs , with which they made numerous dives . To be on the safe side, they were accompanied by divers who could have intervened in an emergency. There was a compressed air cylinder in the submarine. When manned, diving depths of up to 10 meters were reached. In a subsequent unmanned attempt to reach the maximum depth, the submarine imploded at a depth of 12 meters. In retrospect, they called this project their most dangerous project so far.

Roller coaster

2019 they built in a closed Hornbach - Baumarkt within 48 hours of a roller coaster with funds from the hardware store. The only requirement from Hornbach was that safety had the highest priority. In the end, the roller coaster was over 10 meters high, had a loop and ended in a pool. A converted bathtub was used as the car.

Godzilla

In 2019 they built a replica of Godzilla 20 meters long and seven meters high for the film Godzilla II: King of the Monsters . This was then used for a prank by the comedy trio ApeCrime . For this purpose it was sunk in Erlensee near Bickenbach and allowed to emerge by divers at the right moment. Problems arose during this activity, which is why the replica sank and then had to be lifted by a helicopter . The project was supported by Warner Bros. Entertainment, among others .

Submarine 2.0

After reaching a million subscribers, they started building a second submarine from a gas tank.

miscellaneous

In January 2020, The Real Life Guys were part of the SWR report Rolling Rarities: Weird Vehicles, Self-Made . Here they were accompanied during the conversion of a children's pedal car into a go-kart with an electric drive and during the first test drive.
