Philipp von Rummel
Philipp Freiherr von Rummel (born April 30, 1975 ) is a German archaeologist . Since spring 2014 he has been Secretary General of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI).
Philipp von Rummel is the grandson of Friedrich von Rummel and Ursula von Gersdorff and the great-grandson of Wilhelm Waetzoldt . In 1995 he began studying prehistory, early history , classical archeology , ancient history and medieval history at the University of Freiburg . In the summer semester of 1998 and the winter semester of 1998/99 he spent one year at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He also studied at the University of Basel . From 1999 to 2001 he was a research assistant at the Freiburg Collaborative Research Center on Identities and Alterities of the German Research Foundation . In 2000 von Rummel completed his studies in Freiburg with the thesis The graves with accessories in Vandal-era North Africa. On the problem of the archaeological evidence of Vandals and Alans in the North African Vandal Empire and devoted himself to North Africa early on, which should become the geographical focus of his scientific work. In 2001 he took up a doctoral degree and was a research assistant at the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde until 2004 . Before that, in 2006 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Prehistory and Early History and Archeology of the Middle Ages at the University of Freiburg. In 2007/08 von Rummel was a freelance research associate for the project Ethnic Identities in the Early Middle Ages at the Institute for Medieval Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna .
In May 2008 von Rummel became scientific advisor to the Rome department of the DAI, where he was in charge of the editorial department, was responsible for the homepage and coordinated the department's projects in North Africa. In particular, he researched the Tunisian Chimtou , an ancient city with one of the most important marble quarries of the Roman Empire , and the late ancient city of Rome. At the beginning of June 2013, he was elected as the successor to Ortwin Dally, who moved to the Rome Department as the first director in 2014, as Secretary General of the DAI, of which he is a full member. He took office in spring 2014.
Von Rummel's research focuses on the archeology of late antiquity , the early Middle Ages and the Migration Period , the archeology of identity and the archeology of North Africa. While still a student, he was involved in excavations of the early Halaman hill settlement on the Zähringer Burgberg near Freiburg and in research on Roman and medieval mining in Sulzburg . He also worked on excavations of a Merovingian period cemetery in Heitersheim and the Neolithic and early Halemannic settlement near Vörstetten . In North Africa he took part in excavations in Thugga (Tunisia), from 2001 to 2003 he was the technical director of this German-Tunisian research project. He has been leading the excavations in Simitthu / Chimtou since 2008 together with his Tunisian colleague Mustapha Khanoussi .
