Philippe Le Royer

Philippe Elie Le Royer (born June 27, 1816 in Geneva , † February 22, 1897 in Paris ) was a French politician .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and, after completing his studies, was a lawyer in Paris and then in Chalon-sur-Saône , before he began working as a lawyer in Lyon in 1855 . After September 4, 1870, he became General Procurator of Lyon, but resigned a few months later in January 1871.

After the founding of the Third French Republic , he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies on February 8, 1871 , where he represented the Rhône department for the republican left ( Gauche républicaine ) until December 13, 1875 .

On January 1, 1875, he was appointed a member of the Senate for life.

During that time he served from February 4 to December 28, 1879 as Secretary of Justice in the government of Prime Minister William Henry Waddington . Previously, in January 1878, he had rejected his appointment as General Procurator at the Court of Auditors ( Cour des Comptes ) as well as in January 1879 at the Court of Cassation .

Later he was initially vice-president before he was elected President of the Senate on February 2, 1882 with 188 votes and 175 against . He held this position for more than eleven years until February 24, 1893. During this time, as chairman of the National Assembly, he led the ballots for the re-election of President Jules Grévy on December 28, 1885 and for the election of Marie François Sadi Carnot on December 3, 1887 after the forced resignation of Jules Grévy.
