Phyllostachys sulphurea is a bamboo - type of the genus Phyllostachys . This type of bamboo is native to eastern China in the provinces: Anhui , Fujian , Henan , Hunan , Jiangsu , Jiangxi , Shaanxi , Shandong , Zhejiang , where it can be found over 300 m above sea level.

description

Phyllostachys sulphurea is a tall bamboo with straight growth. In its home country it can grow to heights of up to 20 m, in Europe as an ornamental plant 4 to 7 m. This bamboo forms rhizomes , some varieties strong. It has strong stalks with a diameter of 4 to 8 cm. The straw sheaths are light brown and dense black spots. The leaves are light green, sometimes striped pale yellow, 6 to 16 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide, and form a dense mass of foliage.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Etymology and systematics

The epithet sulphurea is Latin and stands for sulfur- colored, which refers to the yellow color of the stalks.

use

The bamboo was introduced to Europe (France) in the middle of the 19th century. It is used as an ornamental plant singly, in woods or as a container plant. It prefers clay soils, not too much water, and tolerates frost of −15 to −18 ° C. The sprouts are edible.
