Pierre-Jean Larroque is a French costume designer .

Life

As a child, Pierre-Jean Larroque was fascinated by the world of theater and the costumes of actors. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and graduated from the École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre (ENSATT) in Paris . He has been working as a costume designer for film since the 1980s. He worked with Dominique Borg on the film drama Tolérance , set during the French Revolution , in which Rupert Everett played a leading role. As an assistant to the costume designer Franca Squarciapino , he then worked for Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Cyrano von Bergerac (1990). Then he was also involved in Claude Berris Germinal .

In 1992 Larroque designed the costume design for Éric Rohmers Wintermärchen , which was followed by two works, Der Schöne Sommer (1996) and Le comédien (1997), directed by Christian de Chalonge . For the biopic Toulouse-Lautrec , Larroque received his first César in 1999 in the Best Costumes category . In the years that followed, Larroque received further César nominations, including for Éric Rohmer's historical film The Lady and the Duke (2001) and for Jean-Paul Salomé's crime film Arsène Lupine - The King Among the Thieves (2004) and his war film Female Agents - Phoenix Secret Command (2008) with Sophie Marceau and Julie Depardieu in the lead roles. Larroque was awarded the Emmy for his costumes in the internationally produced and star-studded television miniseries Napoleon (2002) .

Larroque received other Césars for the 1920s comedy Madame Marguerite or the Art of Crooked Tones (2015) by Xavier Giannoli and the 18th century costume film The Temptation (2018) with Cécile de France in the leading role. Larroque also occasionally designs the costumes for theater, ballet and opera productions. In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
