action

Marseille , early 1950s: the young Knock is a loiter who has gambling debts with Lansky. Lansky gives him 24 hours to pay the debt. Knock uses the time to hire a ship's doctor on a ship to India. Although he has no experience as a doctor, he is the only applicant and is therefore accepted. He proves himself on board, can cure typhus fever with great help from the patient and earns a little extra money by selling useless medicine to rich passengers. He decides to actually study medicine on his return.

Five years later, Knock is a doctor with a degree from the University of Marseille and settles in the small town of Saint Maurice, where he succeeds the old Dr. Parpalaid arrives. He is astonished that Parpalaid has no regular customers, especially since Saint Maurice has few residents, but they are disproportionately wealthy. The busy knock recognizes the potential for making money. He teamed up with the mailman and the local pharmacist and found numerous illnesses in hundreds of patients within a very short time, interpreting the treatment according to the patient's income. Business with the disease is going well and the people of Saint Maurice are grateful to him, especially since he also gives lectures on health and personal care at the local school, which actually help the local children.

When Knock is establishing a cautious relationship with the young Adèle, Lansky appears in town. He recognizes Knock and blackmailed him with the knowledge of his past. Knock gives him a strong laxative and eventually treats him on condition that Lansky leave the place immediately. Knock and Adèle become a couple, but Adèle falls ill with tuberculosis . Knock has her admitted to a hospital and secretly pays for the treatment. Meanwhile, the development of the health system continues in the village, so Knock has the local hotel converted into a sanatorium, which is visited by patients from near and far. When Dr. Parpalaid stops by after only eight months, but does not recognize him. Parpalaid is irritated and horrified, but Knock does not allow himself to be dissuaded from his path.

Shortly after Knock visits Adèle in the hospital, he learns that she has died. He is desperate and destroys his practice inventory. At the memorial service, the local pastor, who was always hostile to Knock, accuses Knock of being a fraud. Knock is outraged, leaves the funeral service and packs his things. The community turns against the pastor; Even if Knock wasn't a doctor, he'd helped them all, be it real or imagined illnesses. Together the mourners leave the church and leave the pastor behind. The community prevents Knock from leaving, especially since Adèle, who everyone liked, had made it clear in a letter that she liked Knock. Knock recognizes the love of the people and is happy.

criticism

The world found that Omar Sy in the lead role was a miscast: "Because the nice Sy plays the main character, criticism, ridicule and sarcasm go completely flat." In contrast to the underlying theater play and the film adaptation from 1951, prevail in the film “Not the satire, but the idyll. And that's not enough. ”The Westdeutsche Zeitung criticized the fact that the original“ was turned into a feel-good comedy about hypochondria. The almost two-hour film offers wonderful landscape shots and lots of light entertainment - but is nota satirical masterpiecelike the work with Jouvet ”. The Wiener Zeitung called the film a “questionable, flat comedy”, for the Osnabrücker Zeitung it was a “nostalgic, shallow… tabloid comedy”.

The Tagesspiegel called Docteur Knock - a doctor with certain side effects - a "fraying grotesque between rogue comedy, society farce and comedy adl". The Sächsische Zeitung criticized the film for “being undecided about what it wants to be - comedy, tragedy, character study, romance? Working out depth in this confusion is overwhelming for the main actor ”, says“ the funny autodidact [Omar Sy] is not a good character actor ” than wants to be pointed ”, stated Die Furche .
