Dominique Borg (actually Dominique Borgne , married Sherenet) is a French costume designer and actress .

Life

Dominique Borg was the daughter of the French actress Anne Béranger (1925–1983; nee Bella Golofteiner) and her husband Gérard Borgne; her maternal grandparents were of Russian-Jewish origin. In the post-war period, Borg grew up surrounded by immigrants in her grandfather's shop in the Parisian Quartier des Halles , who made his living as a watchmaker. After studying philosophy, she first trained as an actress at the Center d'Art Dramatique de la rue Blanche in the class of Henri Rollan and then at the Conservatoire d'Art Dramatique from teachers such as René Simon and Antoine Vitez. She had previously made her stage debut at the age of 17. Like her mother, who was busy as a singer, actress, dancer and producer, Borg was also active in costume and stage design at the beginning of her career. At theaters and operas, she then shifted her focus to making costumes, working over the years with directors such as Denis Llorca, Marcel Maréchal, Bernard Murat, Georges Lavelli, Jean-Louis Thamin and Roger Louret.

With Ariane, with Isabelle Adjani in the title role, she was first used in 1974 as a costume designer for films. With Bruno Nuytten's lavish biopic Camille Claudel , again with Adjani in the title role and Gérard Depardieu as Auguste Rodin , Borg was able to record a great success and win the French César film award in the Best Costumes category. In the mid-1990s, Borg made the costumes for two films with Jean-Paul Belmondo : Claude Lelouch's Hugo adaptation Les Misérables (1995) and the comedy Désiré (1996), which is based on a play by Sacha Guitry and another star in Fanny Ardant of French cinema. After Les Misérables, Lelouch also entrusted her with the costume design of his film Men and Women - The Instructions for Use (1996). For Agnès Merlet's biography Artemisia about the Italian baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi , Borg was nominated for the César in 1998, which she won again in 2002 for the mystery adventure Pact of the Wolves . One year later she was awarded the Danish Robert Film Prize for her costumes for the period film Dina - My Story, set in Norway .

Over the years, Borg received a total of six nominations for the Molière Theater Prize for her work as a costume designer , which she won each for a theater production of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt's The Free Spirit . In 2014, Borg stepped in for the original director for a staging of the stage play Kinship by Carey Perloff at the Théâtre de Paris , in which Isabelle Adjani, who has been friends with Borg since Camille Claudel , played a leading role, making her first appearance as a director. Borg also designed the costumes for opera productions, ballets, concerts (including by Mylène Farmer ) and musicals such as Le Roi Soleil .

Borg's cousin is film editor Francine Sandberg .
