Pierre Hongre (also Petrus Hungarus, Peter the Hungarian ; * in (?) Bártfa in Hungary ; † not before 1510, probably in Lyon ) was an early printer and bookseller in Lyon and Toulouse . As Petrus de Bartua he worked temporarily in Venice .

Life

Hongre or Hungarus probably came from Bártfa in what is now eastern Slovakia . From 1477 to 1479 he was in Venice under the name Pietro or Petrus de Bartua business partner of Francisus Renner , to whom he cast the letters .

Hongre can be proven to have been a printer in Lyon since 1482. The following year he printed the French version of La Légende dorée of the Legenda aurea with Matthias Huß . After Konrad Haebler , Hongre was the sponsor of this partnership. The letters of the richly illustrated work were then used by Sixtus Glockengiesser and other Lyon printers. Even Guillaume Le Roy used type alphabets of Hongre.

By 1491 at the latest, Hongre stayed in Toulouse, where he made letters for Henry Mayer . In a notarial deed the following year he was listed as a bookseller (Mercator Librorum) . Hongre returned to Lyon in the same year and to Hungary in 1493. In 1492 he was considered wealthy with a fortune of 120 livres tournois .

Two or three years later, Hongre opened a new publishing house in Lyon. He specialized in small format prints and used the city's smallest types ( 5 point ). Although his Lyon Missal 1500 was one of the most successful printing works, he was temporarily unable to pay his taxes and was only released because of his services to the city's printing trade. A partnership with the type founder Antoine Doulcet (also Doulzet ) has been proven until 1510 .

In a colophon from 1497, Hongre describes himself as “ Magister ” and “totius artis impressorie peritissimus” (master of the art of printing) . He did not have his own printer brand , but ended his work with five lines that ended with "laus deo" (Praise be to God) .
