description
Vegetative characteristics
The Pilea involucrata is an evergreen, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 18 centimeters. The constantly compared to the stems disposed leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The simple, dark green leaf blades are 3 to 8 centimeters long and up to 3 centimeters wide, mostly elliptical to elongated, rarely egg-shaped, with a pointed upper end. They are thick and arched in shape. It is characterized by three leaf veins that curve from the leaf base to the leaf tip. The leaf surface forms regular protuberances between the leaf veins. With stronger sunlight, the dark green leaves take on a dark red shimmer. Different cultivars show silvery patterned, reddish to almost black leaves.
Generative characteristics
Pilea involucrata is single-sexed ( monoecious ). The zymous , dense inflorescences arise in the leaf axils and contain around 200 flowers. The relatively small, white-pink flowers are four-fold. The sepals are only about 1 millimeter long and oval. The stamens protrude beyond the calyx and "explode" when vibrated. In the female flowers there is usually only an upper carpel and a simple style.
The nut fruits are always lonely. The seeds contain endosperm and a straight embryo with two ovate-elliptical or circular cotyledons ( cotyledons ).
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.
use
Pilea involucrata is a relatively popular houseplant due to its decorative leaves and easy vegetative propagation by cuttings . Because it can be propagated so easily by cuttings, it also received its common English name “Friendship Plant”. It is a partial shade plant and loves moist soil without waterlogging. It needs relatively high humidity and temperatures above 20 ° C.
