Pilea microphylla is a species of cannon flowers ( Pilea ) within the Urticaceae family .
It is used as an ornamental plant , for example occasionally as a ground cover .
Description and ecology
Vegetative characteristics
Pilea microphylla is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of up to 45 centimeters. She has no stinging hair . The stems are succulent and break off easily. Broken parts of the plant easily take root again.
The against-constantly arranged leaves are simple. The light green, slightly succulent leaf blade is about 3 millimeters long.
Generative characteristics
The lateral inflorescences consist of small, ball- shaped partial inflorescences . The seeds are very small with a diameter of about 0.3 millimeters. For this, the plants produce an extraordinary number of seeds.
The pollen is thrown out of the anthers by the plants through the suddenly relaxing stamens . With Pilea microphylla , the pollen is expelled up to a meter. The seeds are also catapulted out of the fruit by a sudden stretching of the remains of the stamens; hence the generic name cannon flowers .
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42 or 50.
