Pyotr Maximovich Ostapenko
Pyotr Maximowitsch Ostapenko ( Russian Пётр Макси́мович Оста́пенко ; born September 17, 1928 in Prochladny ; † April 8, 2012 in Zhukovsky ) was a Soviet test pilot .
Life
Ostapenko was born in Prochladny in the Kabardian-Balkar ASSR . His family moved during the reign of Catherine II. Of Chernigov to the North Caucasus and was among the resident Grebener Cossacks (a group of the Terek Cossacks ).
He spent his youth in Vladikavkaz , where he went to school from 1936 to 1942. Ostapenko was called up in 1947 and completed pilot training, which he completed in 1951. He then served as a flight instructor at the flying school . In 1957 he was discharged from the air force and moved to Schukowski to the test pilot school, where he graduated in 1958. In addition to his work as a test pilot for the OKB MiG , he took up evening studies at the Moscow Aviation Institute , which he graduated in 1968.
Ostapenko flew everything that was designed at MiG; he carried out numerous first flights and was involved in the development and further development of the MiG-19 , MiG-21 , MiG-23 , MiG-25 , MiG-27 , MiG-29 , MiG-31 and their variants. He completed a total of more than 5000 flight hours as a test pilot and tested more than 60 different aircraft types.

On September 20, 1979, both engines failed during a test flight with the MiG-31 from Akhtubinsk airfield . Ostapenko and his copilot Leonid Popov had to get out of the ejector seat, the plane was lost.
Ostapenko was a reserve cosmonaut and involved in the spiral test program , where he carried out five test flights.
Most recently, Ostapenko worked as an engineer at OKB Mikoyan.
Ostapenko was married to Luisa Kharitonovna. His son Viktor is also a test pilot.
Pyotr Ostapenko was buried in the Bykovo Memorial Cemetery in Zhukovsky.

Pyotr Ostapenko set 8 world records, including one absolute, with three types of aircraft:
- Je-166 ( Je-152-1 ) with the Tumanski R-15-300 (thrust 100 kN);
- Je-266 (prototype Je-155R-3 of the MiG-25, which was also used for the record on 500 km circuit and for climbing time records), with the Tumanski R-15B-300 (thrust also 100 kN; the production version of the reconnaissance aircraft was however equipped with the reinforced version R-15BD-300 with a thrust of 110 kN.);

Honors
On April 26, 1971, Pyotr Ostapenko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union and the corresponding Order of Lenin .
