Play with Fire ( English for "play with fire") is a song by the German singer-songwriter Nico Santos . The track is the second single from Santos' second self-titled studio album.

Creation and artwork

Play with Fire was written by Nico Santos himself, together with co-authors Benjamin Bistram ( Biztram ), Aaron Pfeiffer, Konstantin Scherer ( Djorkaeff ), Vincent Stein ( Beatzarre ) and Max Wolfgang. The production was carried out by the German producer duo Beatzarre (Vincent Stein) and Djorkaeff (Konstantin Scherer). The first of the two was also responsible for mixing the piece. The mastering was done by Sterling Sound in Edgewater ( New Jersey , USA ), under the direction of Randy Merrill. Santos sang the song even though he had a fever of 40 ° C on the day of the recording .

On the front cover of the single you can only see Santos - in addition to the artist name and song title. Seen from the observer, he is turned sideways to the right, with his back to the observer. He's wearing a black T-shirt , the entire cover image is reddish. The name of the artist and the song title are centered in yellow capital letters.

Publication and promotion

The first publication of Play with Fire took place as download and streaming on 1 November 2019. The publication was carried out as a single track by the record label Virgin Records , the product was distributed by Universal Music Publishing . The song was published by Budde Music Publishing, Djorkaeff Beatzarre Edition, Fenslau Musikverlag, Fisherman Songs, Mort Edition, Sony / ATV Music Publishing . After Play with Fire was initially only released as a single track, it was released on May 8, 2020 on Santos' second self-titled studio album.

To promote the song, there was a live appearance with Play with Fire in the ARD morning magazine as well as in prime time in the ProSieben show Die! Heart! Blow! Show! .

The lyrics to Play with Fire are in English . Translated into German , the title means “playing with fire”. The music and the text were written and composed jointly by Benjamin “Biztram” Bistram, Aaron Pfeiffer, Nico Santos, Konstantin “Djorkaeff” Scherer, Vincent “Beatzarre” Stein and Max Wolfgang. Musically, the song moves in the area of urban pop . The tempo is 83 beats per minute . The key is F minor . In terms of content, Play with Fire is about a toxic relationship that you can never get enough of. A love that you should stay away from, otherwise you will be seriously hurt.

The song is based on two verses, a chorus and a bridge . The song begins with the first verse, which is followed by a so-called “pre-chorus” before the actual refrain follows. The chorus ends with a "post-chorus" before the same process is repeated with the second verse. After the second chorus there is a short bridge before the song ends with the third and final chorus.

Music video

There were two official video releases for Play with Fire . Initially, a poetry video celebrated its premiere on November 1st, 2019. This shows, as is typical for poetry videos, always the currently sung song lines. It is shown in yellow capital letters against a red background. Every now and then you can see Santos's face on the left or right edge of the picture. The right music video for Play with Fire finally premiered on November 13, 2019. Santos published a first screenshot on October 28, 2019. The shoot for this took four days. It shows Santos being held captive and tortured by a young woman (played by Eileen Heydorn). The video ends with Santos hanging upside down from the ceiling, his legs tied with a rope . The total length of the video is 3:46 minutes. As with some of Santos' music videos before, it was again directed by Marvin Ströter from Wuppertal . To date, both videos have over 4.5 million views on YouTube (as of February 2020).

Charts and chart placements

Play with Fire reached position 54 in the single charts in Germany and stayed in the charts for a total of 13 weeks. In the German airplay charts , the single reached second place for three weeks in early 2020, behind Dua Lipa's Don't Start Now . Furthermore, Play with Fire was able to place itself in the German iTunes daily evaluations for several weeks and reached its highest chart listing at position ten on November 2, 2019. In Austria , the single reached its highest chart listing at position 59 in six weeks and in Switzerland at eleven Chart weeks with position 66.

For Santos as an interpreter, this is the seventh chart success in the German single charts as well as the sixth in Austria and the fifth in Switzerland. For the fourth time after Rooftop , Safe and Better , a single of his was placed in all DA-CH countries at the same time . As an author, this was the 20th time he reached the charts in Germany, the 14th time in Austria and the eleventh time in the Swiss charts. While Beatzarre, Biztram and Djorkaeff have already celebrated several chart successes in their writing and producing activities in German-speaking countries, Max Wolfgang's Play with Fire hit the Austrian single charts for the second time after Now That I've Found You ( Martin Garrix feat. John & Michel ) and for the first time the single charts in Germany and Switzerland. For Peiffer, it is the first author participation in the charts in all DA-CH countries.
