Plocosperma buxifolium is the only plant species of the monotypical genus Plocosperma and the family Plocospermataceae . This species occurs only in Mexico ( Central America ).

description

Plocosperma buxifolium is an evergreen shrub or shrub-like tree . The opposite, short-stalked leaves are very small. The simple and leathery leaf blade is oblong to ovate. The leaf margin is smooth. Stipules are missing.

One to seven stalked flowers are grouped together in axillary, racemose inflorescences . Plocosperma buxifolia is dioecious, separate sexes ( diocesan ). The unisexual, weak zygomorphen , large flowers are five to sechszählig double perianth (Perianth). The sepals are fused tubular, with the calyx lobes being significantly longer than the calyx tube. The petals are fused bell-shaped. There is only one stamen circle , the stamens are free from each other, but fused with the crown. Two carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. One or two partially fused styles end in a total of four scars.

There are fruit capsules formed which usually only be one to four seeds rarely. The seeds have a tuft of hair on one end.

Systematics

The genus Plocosperma was established in May 1876 by George Bentham in Genera Plantarum , 2, 2, pp. 789-790. The first description of Plocosperma buxifolium was in May 1876 by George Bentham in Hooker's Icones Plantarum , 12, p. 82, plate 1195 as the only species of the genus. A synonym for Plocosperma Benth. is Lithophytum Brandegee . Synonyms for Plocosperma buxifolium Benth. are Lithophytum violaceum Brandegee , Plocosperma anomalum S.F.Blake , Plocosperma microphyllum Baill. ex Soler. While these few species used to be grouped here, they are now all synonyms of the only species in this family. The Plocospermataceae family was established in 1973 by John Hutchinson in The Families of Flowering Plants , p. 469.

Some authors also have three to four species in the genus; they include other Lithophytum species in this genus. Plocosperma buxifolium was included in the Loganiaceae family , i.e. in the Gentianales order , but it represents the independent Plocospermataceae family according to more recent findings obtained using molecular biological methods.
