Pniw ( Ukrainian Пнів ; Russian Пнев Pnew , Polish Pniów ) is a village in the Ukrainian Oblast Ivano-Frankivsk with about 4600 inhabitants (2001).
The village, first mentioned in writing in 1482, is the administrative center of the 42.91 km² district council in Nadwirna Rajon , which also includes the villages of Bilosoryna ( Білозорина , ⊙ ) with about 820 inhabitants and Mosolivka ( Мозолівка , ⊙ ) with about 970 inhabitants .
The village is located in the east of the historical Galicia on the bank of the Bystryzja Nadvirnjanska 5 km southwest of the Rajon center Nadvirna and about 45 km southwest of the Oblast center Ivano-Frankivsk .
Pniw Castle
In the village there is the Pniw Castle ( Пнівський замок ) from the second half of the 16th century, which was an important fortress post during the Polish-Turkish wars and the strongest fortification in Pokutia until the Stanisławów Fortress was built. In the meantime the castle has fallen into ruin.
