The Pole Star is a multi-purpose vessel owned by the Northern Lighthouse Board .

The ship was built under the hull number 709 at Ferguson Shipbuilders in Port Glasgow . The ship put into service in 2000 replaced the Fingal built in 1964 . It's stationed in Oban .

commitment

The ship is primarily used by the Northern Lighthouse Board as a buoy lay-up and for the maintenance and supply of lighthouses and navigation marks in the coastal waters of Scotland and the Isle of Man . Due to its shallow draft, the ship can be used very flexibly. In addition, the ship can be used for hydrographic surveying work and for wreck search.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . For electricity generation are three Cummins - Wärtsilä diesel engines of the type 8L170 each with 920  kW power available, the three Leroy-Somer drive generators. A harbor generator set consisting of a Cummins diesel engine with 256 kW output and a Stamford generator is also available. The propulsion is provided by two Rolls-Royce - azimuth thruster each with 1,000 kW of power. The ship is equipped with two bow thrusters , each with an output of 210 kW. The drive system provides it with a system for dynamic positioning .

The deck superstructures are located approximately from the middle of the ship towards the foredeck . Behind the superstructure is a 90 m² open working deck. A crane that can lift 18 t is installed here. On the starboard side there is a workshop accessible from the working deck. Below the working deck there is a small hold that is accessible through a hatch in the working deck. Here z. B. stored the chains for the tons.

The ship is set up for 15 crew members . The cabins are located on the main deck and the two decks above. On the main deck are u. a. nor the galley , provisions and cooling load, the mess and a lounge for the crew members. On the two decks above, there is an office, a laundry, an officer's lounge and various technical rooms in addition to the cabins. In addition to the cabins for the crew, a twin and a four-bed cabin are available, so that six people can be accommodated in addition to the crew.
