Poptún is a small town in Guatemala with around 20,000 inhabitants . Poptún is located in the southeast of the department Petén and is the administrative seat of the large municipality ( Municipio ) Poptún, which extends over 1,766 km² and has over 35,000 inhabitants.

Location and climate

The city is located about 370 km northeast of Guatemala City on the CA 13 highway, which branches off the CA 9 Atlantic highway near Lake Izabal and leads through the tropical lowlands of the Peten to Flores and on to Belize . The municipality is located in a pine forest area, which has now been severely decimated, between 400 and 600 meters above sea level. It is bordered by Dolores to the north and west , San Luis to the south, and Belize to the east.

Temperatures range between 10 and 32 ° C, humidity is around 80 percent, and annual rainfall is around 1,700 mm.

Economy and tourism

Poptún is located on a very important traffic axis through Peten, about halfway between Lake Izabal in the south and Lake Peten-Itzá in the north and their tourist attractions such as Río Dulce and Tikal . history

Poptun is one of the youngest communities in Guatemala. The place on the trunk road built in 1927 was run as Colonia Agrícola in 1945 and only raised to a municipality in 1966. Poptún is now the center of the southeastern Petén.
