Vegetative characteristics

Poranopsis are lianas whose lower stem axes are woody and hairless and whose shoot tips are herbaceous and hairy with two-armed trichomes pale yellow-red or gray tomentose to silky. The root system consists of fiber roots. The leaves have a rounded or flattened petiole that forms a slightly pronounced pulvinus . The leaf blade is heart-shaped, ovate, membranous and often wrinkled. The upper side of the leaf is covered with moderately downy hairs, the underside of the leaf is densely hairy. The leaf vein is foot-shaped.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are in the armpits or rarely terminally. They are accompanied by bracts and are panicle-shaped . The small, often fragrant flowers are in groups at the nodes of the inflorescence. The bracts are foliage-like; Texture, hairs and veins resemble the leaves.

Directly below the calyx are two scale-like bracts . The five sepals stand free from each other, overlap like roof tiles (quincuncial) and encompass the base of the corolla tube . The sepals are unevenly enlarged on the fruit. The crown is funnel-shaped or bell-shaped funnel-shaped, the crown hem is covered with five lobes that are folded in the bud but not twisted into one another. The stamens of the five stamens are fused with the base of the corolla tube, above the fusions they are free and are thread-shaped. The less than 1 mm long dust bag are elliptically shaped and jump longitudinally on. The pollen grains are tricolor and non-prickly. The pistil does not protrude beyond the crown, the flower base is ring-shaped or may be missing. The ovary is unilocular and contains four basal upright ovules . The stylus is simple or can be absent, the terminal scar is two-spherical.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are spherical to elliptical nut fruits , at the tip of which is often the permanent style. They are membranous, smooth or slightly wrinkled. The fruits are completely or partially enclosed by the sepals, the outer three are greatly enlarged, then egg-shaped or almost circular. The edges are free or partially grown together at the base. The inner two sepals are only slightly enlarged and often sickle-shaped. All sepals are thinly skinned on the fruit, the veins are protruding and darker in color, they consist of a central vein and finer reticulated secondary veins.

The fruits contain a single seed , this is reddish brown to black in color, smooth and hairless, its hilum is circular or, more rarely, semicircular.

Occurrence

The species of the genus Poranopsis occur on the Indian subcontinent as far as southwestern China and throughout Southeast Asia .

Within the bindweed family, the genus is classified in the tribe Cardiochlamyeae according to molecular biological knowledge . In addition to the genus Poranopsis , the genera Cardiochlamys , Cordisepalum , Duperreya , Dinetus and Tridynamia also belong to this tribe.
