The Portage River is a tributary of Lake Erie on its south bank in the northwestern US state of Ohio . The Portage River, together with its tributaries, drains a total of 1,559 km², which lie in the catchment area of Lake Erie. The main stream is created near New Rochester in Wood County by the confluence of the Middle Branch and South Branch Portage River , flows generally in an east-northeast direction and flows into Lake Erie after about 100 km at Port Clinton in Ottawa County .

The headwaters Middle Branch Portage River is created by the confluence of Needles Creek and Bader Creek about 12 km southwest of the village of Bowling Green in Wood County ( 41 ° 15 ′ 9 ″  N , 83 ° 44 ′ 1 ″  W ), flows northeast and empties at New Rochester in the Portage River. The second headwaters South Branch Portage River rises about 4 km south of the village of Arcadia in Hancock County ( 41 ° 4 ′ 19 ″  N , 83 ° 31 ′ 5 ″  W ) and flows generally north to its confluence with the Middle Branch.

The name " Portage " probably comes from the first visitors to the river, who were forced to carry their canoes and boats frequently due to the numerous shallows and rapids in the river. The mouth of the river has changed at least twice in the past three centuries. Maps from 1754 show the estuary 30 km northwest near what is now the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge , while the river flowed into Lake Erie 10 km northeast at what is now West Harbor.
